POLICE DEPARTMENT
The City of Savannah is served by a full time Police Department. The Department has a Chief and five full time officers and approximately five reserve officers. The Police Department provides seven day a week, 24-hour protection throughout the city. The Police Department has recently updated its equipment and has five Police Cruisers completely outfitted with the latest radar and police safety equipment. The department has also moved to the computerization of its records and reports over the last two years for greater efficiently. The department provides assistance for residents and visitors locked out of their cars, bank escorts for local businesses, and handles nuisance and dog complaints within the community. It also does security at special events in the city, while enforcing the laws of the city and state. The Savannah Police Department has two officers in the DARE program they operate the DARE program in cooperation with the Savannah R-III School District. This successful program encourages lifetime abstention from drugs and alcohol for middle and elementary school aged children. The Savannah Police Department has a K-9 unit. The dog, a Belgium Malinois, is named Savage. Savage has been trained in dual-purpose police work. Skilled in both drug detection and search & rescue the K-9 unit is used on a daily shift basis. The Police Department is dispatched by the Andrew County Sheriff's Department. The Police Department also utilizes the Andrew County Jail for its prisoners. . FIRE DEPARTMENT The City, through recent updates in the Fire Department and Water System has obtained a 6 rating from the Insurance Services Organizations. This rating is instrumental in the reduction of insurance rates for property owners within the city. In addition to fighting fires, the Department participates in fire prevention activities for children in the community, provides life saving extraction for automobile accident victims, and a multitude of other public safety functions. The City of Savannah recently took delivery of a new $250,000 state-of-the-art fire truck. This vehicle will help tremendously with the department’s performance. A city funded Volunteer Fire Department serves the City of Savannah. The Savannah Volunteer Fire Department has 44 volunteers, a Fire Chief and an Assistant Fire Chief. The city experiences approximately 25-30 fires each year. A tax supported Rural Fire District serves the area surrounding the city. The two Departments operate on a cooperative basis, sharing equipment and facilities to further fire protection efforts within the community.
